 MADD Celebrates Black History Month

As the nation celebrates Black History Month, MADD highlights the fact that drunk driving is color blind. Families of every color fall victim to this perilous crime and families of every color must get involved in order to eliminate drunk driving.

In 2003, more than 1,400 African-American men, women and children were killed in alcohol-related traffic crashes. Nearly one in three traffic fatalities involving African-Americans involved a drunk driver.

MADD is here to help. We offer free services to bereaved and injured drunk driving victims/survivors. More than 1,200 trained victim advocates are available nationwide to help with:
  • Support groups
  • Applying for government-funded financial assistance
  • Attending DUI criminal and civil court proceedings with victim families or in place of them
  • Writing victim impact statements and more

MADD has developed public awareness materials specifically designed for the African-American community which are available in the media center or by calling a local MADD office.

Special thanks to Nationwide Insurance for their sponsorship of and commitment to MADD’s outreach to the African-American community.
