3 of 10 Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash at some point in their lifetime. National estimates suggest only 1 out of every 100-200 drunk drivers are caught.

TOOFS Fact Sheet

What is Tie One On For Safety (TOOFS)?

  • Started in 1986, MADD's premier public awareness project, Tie One On For Safety, celebrates its 20th Anniversary this year. The red ribbon is a symbol of the drivers pledge to drive safe, sober and buckled up.  Additionally, MADD asks the public to Tie One On For Safety   in support of MADDs Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving.
  • MADD, through the Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving, calls for intensive, high-visibility law enforcement     efforts that included sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols; advocates that all convicted drunk drivers have an alcohol ignition interlock installed on their vehicles; supports the research of transparent, vehicle-based technologies that will prevent a drunk driver from driving drunk; and mobilizes grassroots support of all of these efforts, led by MADD.
  • Holiday drivers display a MADD red ribbon or red ribbon decal in a visible location on their vehicles to show family, friends and loved ones they support safer roads free from drunk driving. It also reminds other drivers and passengers to do the same.
  • Activities to support TOOFS are organized by a majority of the 400 MADD affiliates across the country. More than 6 million ribbons and ribbon symbols are distributed annually.
  • Our message includes seat belts because it is the best defense in a crash caused by a drunk driver.
  • Tie One On For Safety runs Thanksgiving through New Years Day when road travel is the heaviest of the year and typically drunk driving increases.

Why is Tie One On For Safety important?

  • Each year nationally, more than 1,000 people typically die during Thanksgiving to New Years in drunk driving crashes and more than 2,000 are killed in drunk driving crashes and/or crashes where safety belts were not used.
  • Nationally, fatalities involving a driver at or above at .08 were down 1.2 percent from 13,099 in 2004 to 12,945 in 2005.  Additionally, an estimated 500,000 people are injured in alcohol-related crashes each year. (NHTSA, 2006; Miller, 2000)
  • Alcohol-related crashes cost the American public an estimated $114.3 billion and people other than the drunk driver paid $71.6 billion of that amount. (Taylor, Miller and Cox 2002)

How Can You Support?

  • in a visible location on your vehicle. Red ribbons and red ribbon window decals are available through local MADD at www.madd.org/nc
  • Host parties responsibly by offering mocktails and other non-alcoholic beverages, and by providing alternate transportation or accommodations for guests who have been drinking. For safe party tips visit www.madd.org/safeparty.
  • Designate a non-drinking driver before drinking begins.
  • Log onto www.madd.org and learn more about the Campaign and how you can help support intensive enforcement, current alcohol ignition interlock technology and learn more about advanced vehicle-based anti-drunk driving technologies.

MADD will be hosting two press conferences to kick off our campaign.  One will be in Raleigh and the other in Charlotte.

We appreciate the support of State Farm Insurance as our Tie One On For Safety Statewide sponsor

Shifting Gears Road Rally & Auto Show

September 12th, 2009

NC State Fairgrounds (Jim Martin Building)

www.maddroadrally.org

The Road Rally is a novelty rally designed for auto enthusiasts or anyone who wants to have fun! The road rally is a family friendly event with activities such as a kids zone, safety fair and auto show commencing at the completion of the road rally.  The concept of this event is similar to the popular TV show "The Amazing Race" with a few extras added in.

Unlike the serious professional road rallies that take place involving time and intense precision in every aspect, MADD's Shifting Gears road rally is a fun, innovative and novelty rally.  Our rally includes ordinary people in ordinary cars enjoying a unique/ interactive event.  It involves clues and puzzle solving as a way to identify landmarks to aid in navigating the course route.

This event is for those looking for something other than the typical nonprofit walk, golf tournament or gala.  With a tremendous response so far from corporations and individuals this years event is sure to become one of the top events in our State.  Below is a listing of several ways you as an individual, family team or corporation can participate.

  • Start a team and raise funds to support MADD or to honor a loved one effected by underage drinking or drunk driving.
  • Become a corporate sponsor and receive unparalleled exposure by having your business as a featured stop on the route (what better way to bring potential customers to your door front). Visit the event site for a sponsorship kit.
  • Participate in the car show by displaying your special vehicle.
  • Make a donation to our event or hold a special fundraiser on our behalf.
  • Come out support us with your participation by attending the event or become an event volunteer.

Visit our event site for more details: www.maddroadrally.org

Justin Photo2

Justen's story is one of the many tragic stories we hear from victim's everyday.  On December 8, 2006, 7 year old Justen, his friend Patty and his family went out to dinner. As they were leaving the restaurant a drunk driver crashed into their car going 70 mph.  Justen, his stepfather and his mother, who was 7 months pregnant at the time of the crash, were all injured. 8 year old Patty was killed instantly.

So in Patty's memory, Justen wants to help save the lives of others. His campaign is for everyone to donate $4.87 to support Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). The significance of $4.87 is one penny represents every life lost due to drunk driving last year in North Carolina. This money would go to help support MADD's life saving mission.

Our goal is to convert every dollar donated towards Justen's campaign (which can be in any amount) into pennies and cover his elementary school floor and break a world record.  Justen's goal is to reach $37,655.10 which should be easily achievable from support from people like you.  This campaign is part of Justen's healing process in which as you can see from his letter he wants to help save other people from experiencing the same tragedy.

To learn more about Justen and to see pictures and join his effort visit our website on Facebook at www.causes.com/madd  .  We appreciate your consideration and hope you will encourage your family and friends to join us as well.
