MADD Florida Executive Director, David Pinsker, arranged for MADD to appear on Lifetime TV's morning show, The Balancing Act.  MADD’s Power of Parents® program was center stage.  The show will air in April (we will keep you posted with more information).

Balancing Act
Balancing Act Host Danielle Knox, Jan Withers, President of MADD,
and Ken Griffith, President of National Assoc. of Secondary School Principals

Dave has only been Executive Director for a few months, but has already proven to be a powerful advocate, jumping in “on all four” with all his energy and skills to support MADD’s mission.  We are so pleased he is with us.

The other powerful people with whom Dorene Ocamb, the National Marketing Director, and I met are the MADD Broward County staff members.  These women exude a passionate concern for supporting victims and a passionate dedication to saving lives.

April 21st is PowerTalk21® day—the national day for parents to talk with their teens about the dangers of underage drinking.  However, we don’t want that to be the only time to have the discussion.  The power comes from positive, frequent discussions with our children, sharing expectations and consequences, because we love them and want them to always be safe.

Three out of four teens say that their parents are the number one influence about alcohol use.  We not only have the responsibility to have these discussions with our children, we have the power to influence their decisions.

This is my first poem I wrote about drunk driving. My wife and I were hit and run into a telephone pole in Rockport Mass on March 21 1976.She went through the windshield, and the power box was dangling above her head. We put the lights out that night at 10.30. She broke her Jaw lost ler teath for life, and we found our later it was three teenagers , drunk and drag racing each other. That date was also the anniversary of my mothers death in March 21 1954 at 10.30 at night. Please accept the following as a gift writing It can never happen to me ! By Peter A. Todd 03/21/1999 Our 34th.Anniversary from death 03/21/2010 I look back as if it were just yesterday For that night will never be erased from my mind, The vehicle that was headed straight for us As if the driver has just become blind It smashed into us with tremendous impact So much it tore and embedded our skin To the metal of the dashboard in fact Of our vehicle we were riding to home in But, that was the least of our sorrows As I now tried to burst open my door Through my mind I questioned, Will there be a tomorrow? For my family I so loved and adore My wife, here face now covered with blood and glass Who in their right mind could cause such a thing? The answers were not far to be found in fact From the condition the other driver was in The driver has no concern for my family that was maimed All that was wanted was the bottle within To escape the trouble that the offender was now in So, you might ask yourself, what do I care? Such an accident could never happen to me My friends you must always be aware What is around the next corner, or beyond the next tree! For the drunken drivers, they have no brains It has been consumed by all they drank So if you go out, I hope you will refrain You will always have your loved ones thanks It does not matter the time of the year Nor whether it be day or dark of night Or even if your home is far or near You must keep your senses of clear sight Watch out for the other car You do not know who or what it contains It could be a family like mine or yours Or, the drunken driver who has just drowned his or her brain
