Daniel, who they called Danny, was 17 and about to start his senior year of high school. He was smart – had a 98 average – and was great at sports. “He could have done anything he wanted,” says his mother, Barbara Boyle. Richard, or Ricky, was just 13 and going into 8th grade. He played the trombone and was excited about joining the school marching band.
Young lives with such promise, ended by someone’s terrible choice to drink and drive.
It took several years after her sons were killed for Barbara to feel ready to join MADD. But once she did, she spent many summer holidays – Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day – taking about the dangers of drinking and driving, and boating while intoxicated. She reminds people that driving a boat after drinking can and does take innocent lives.
So this summer, keep families like the Boyles in your mind and designate a non-drinking driver, whether you’re on the road or the water.
