The Power of Parents: it's your influence

The Power of Parents: it's your influence: Did you know that 74 percent of kids turn to their parents for guidance on drinking? That’s why Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) created this website. It’s packed with tips and expert resources so parents can talk effectively about alcohol with teens and support safer communities. We’re proud to include: A parenting handbook created by Robert Turrisi, PhD, of Pennsylvania State University Q&As with noted alcohol researchers such as Robert Brewer, MD, MSPH, of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, James Fell, MA, of Pacific Institute for Research & Evaluation, and Traci Toomey, PhD, of University of Minnesota. MADD knows that informed, caring parents can make a difference—and we’re here to help.

Protecting You / Protecting Me

Protecting You/Protecting Me is an alcohol use prevention curriculum in grades one through five.

  • Program is taught by a trained adult
  • Program consists of 8 lessons in each grade
  • A model program by the US Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Center for Substance Abuse Prevention
  • Program goal is to prevent the injury and death of children and youth due to underage consumption of alcoholic beverages and vehicle related risks

Youth In Action

Youth In Action (YIA) is a MADD program designed to prevent underage drinking by decreasing social and retail availability of alcohol for youth under the age of 21 and by supporting the enforcement of underage drinking laws.  This a great opportunity to work with law enforcement, build leadership skills and help save young lives.

  • Starting a team: teams consist of groups of youth and at least one adult coordinator after completing screening.  Teams do not have to form within a pre-existing youth organization, independent teams may also be formed.
  • Teams participate in activities such as alcohol compliance checks, sticker shock, shoulder tap surveys and roll call briefings.

UMADD

  • Activities with law enforcement, such as roll call briefings and law enforcement recognition events
  • Alcohol purchase surveys
  • Compliance checks
  • Campus organized candelight vigils
  • Court monitoring, victim advocacy and public speaking
  • Special events hosted by MADD
  • Assist at drunk driving or underage drinking impact panels

powercamp

MADD Power Camps is a youth leadership program to meet peers from around the state. We will create an environment that is focused on the prevention of underage drinking.  MADD Power Camps will provide youth with the knowledge and skills necessary to initiate change in their communities. It is time to make your environment all about YOU!

Broadband

Thanks to the support from CN and GuideOne Insurance, MADD has been able to transition the in-school underage and binge drinking prevention program, BROADBAND. This transition to an on-line tool enhances the program in several ways. First, as part of MADD.org, schools are able to access the videos and printed materials at no cost to the school. Secondly, as a Web-based opportunity, now parents will have access to the materials and can watch the videos with their children.
