Underage Drinking

The 21 law: More Important Than Ever Before

The 21 drinking age law enjoys strong public support, congressional support and research support for its effectiveness. This strong support is reflected in the House highway bill that is being developed.

The 21 drinking age law and its enforcement have been proven to save more than 25,000 lives since states started enacting it in 1975. While it turns 25 years old in July, some want the public to believe that it is out of date or old and ineffective. These inaccuracies not only undermine enforcement of the law but endanger lives. The law helps save lives and prevents injuries on and off the roadways.

A just published Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis found substantial reductions in binge drinking since the national drinking age was set at 21 two decades ago, with one exception: college students. Again, this speaks to the fact that the atmosphere on college campuses is permissive and there is lax enforcement in most cases despite the fact that the 21 law is supported by legislators, researchers, and the public.

In an effort to help prevent underage drinking and support the 21 drinking age before teens reach college, MADD’s Parent Initiative, supported by Nationwide Insurance, launches this fall. A comprehensive, engaging website in addition to an informative brochure will arm high school parents with the tools they need to discuss alcohol with their teens. We know parents are the major influencer in teens’ lives and most alcohol purchased underage is by adults. High school parents are encouraged to sign up for the newsletter now at madd.org with e-issues starting this fall.

Remember, support 21 and prevent underage drinking. These are very important keys to creating a better future for our young people now and in the future.
