Tie One On For Safety Overview Tie One On For Safety, MADD's largest annual public awareness campaign, asks motorists to tie a red MADD ribbon to their vehicles as a pledge to drive safe and sober and a reminder to others to do the same. Tie One On For Safety: History MADD created the Tie One On For Safety campaign, which was originally named the 'Project Red Ribbon' campaign, in 1986 to help heighten public attention to drinking and driving during the holiday season. The program was designed to encourage the public to become actively involved in the fight against drunk driving by tying a MADD ribbon to a visible place on their vehicle, such as the antenna or side mirror.
