Unfortunately, this is another heartbreaking reminder of the prevalence of drunk driving and that too many people continue to die or be injured by this violent crime. The public still gives first offense drunk drivers a pass, yet research shows first-time offenders have driven drunk an average of 87 times before their first arrest. They are tragedies waiting to happen. We can and we must prevent this behavior, and the tools exist to do just that. MADD is working to end drunk driving through its Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving. The Campaign calls for high-visibility law enforcement, mandatory alcohol ignition interlocks for all convicted drunk drivers, and exploration of advanced vehicle technologies that will ultimately make a car inoperable if a driver is legally drunk. Drunk driving can be eliminated, but it is up to all of us to demand it. By supporting stronger laws, stronger enforcement and research for vehicle technology, together we can prevent families like the Griffin’s and Burkman’s from experiencing such a preventable tragedy.
