Alcohol, Cigarettes, and Marijuana Lead the Top Ten List of Drugs Used by U.S. High School Seniors in Past Month

Alcohol is used by more high school seniors than any other drug, according to recent data from the national "2004 Monitoring the Future" study.  Nearly one-half of the 12th graders reported that they drank more than a few sips of alcohol in the past month (48.0%).  Cigarette and marijuana use ranked second and third, with 25% and 19.9% of seniors reporting past month use.  Other drugs included in the top ten list were smokeless tobacco (6.7%), amphetamines (4.6%), and narcotics other than heroin, such as Vicodin, OxyContin, and Percocet (4.3%).  Drugs not ranked in the top ten include steroids (1/7%) and heroin (0.5%).
