Youth Programs Statistics show:Costs of underage drinking in the areas of youth violence and traffic crashes attributable to alcohol use by underage youth in Mississippi represent the largest costs for the state. Youth traffic crashes cost $199.3 million (youth violence cost $222.4 mil).
Underage drinking cost the citizens of Mississippi $534 million in 2005 (all 2006 data has not been released as yet). These costs include medical care, work loss, and pain and suffering associated with multiple problems resulting from the use of alcohol by youth. This translates to a cost of $1,747 per year per youth in the state. Nationwide, Mississippi ranks 41st among the 50 states for cost per youth due to underage drinking.
What is Youth In Action? Youth in Action (YIA) is a MADD program designed to reduce underage drinking by targeting social and retail availability of alcohol for youth under 21.YIA also supports the enforcement of underage drinking laws. By reducing the access of alcohol to minors, this program aims to decrease the amount of youth engaging in underage drinking. MISSION STATEMENT: To reduce the social and retail availability of alcohol to minors and support enforcement of underage drinking laws. What are the goals of Youth In Action? The immediate goal is to decrease access of alcohol to minors and to result in implementing YIA over time to change the perceptions of underage drinking among the community. YIA engages youth as agents in the fight against underage drinking. Teens will get experience in public speaking, letter writing, and will work with community leaders and the local media. YIA is structured with five evidence based projects and one starter activity which is designed to address specific causes of alcohol access in the community. Protecting You/Protecting Me (PYPM)- It is a classroom based alcohol safety program for Grades 1-5 that teaches students about the risks of underage alcohol use, adolescent brain development and vehicle safety skills. Multimedia Resources- Each year MADD produces educational video resources for elementary through high school students using the latest DVD technology. With clips from movies, TV shows, and music videos, the production team weaves them in and around real life interviews and stories by real students presenting the good and bad choices when making everyday decisions. Think Prom- Prom night is a memorable celebration but in too many cases can become the worst night in a teenager’s life. Alcohol, drug use, and impaired driving are all too common results for teens in America. MADD Prom Kit offers safe prom tools for high schools. This pledge-based resource encourages students to not drink or use other drugs and to commit to have a safe and sober prom night. UMMAD- is a university based MADD chapter organized and led by students working to identify solutions to underage and high risk drinking in their college communities. Pass the Keys- is a public awareness campaign in the Hispanic Community that emphasizes the dangers of drinking and driving and stresses the importance of designating a sober driver before drinking.
