Underage Drinking Enforcement operation  Saturday November 15, 2008

KRQE Channel 13

Alcohol sting nets 23
arrests

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - 23 people were arrested in the Albuquerque area in Saturday night's underage alcohol sting.

Police said that the number of arrests has decreased over the last couple of years.

Law enforcement officials are very close to a goal they set two and a half years ago, and they said that it's a matter of keeping up the pressure.

Police believe that underage drinking leads to youth violence, traffic crashes, high risk sexual behavior, property crime, alcohol dependence and dozens of other problems.

Of the 23 people arrested during Saturday's sting, seven were store clerks who allegedly sold alcohol to minors.

Two and a half years ago, Albuquerque stores had a compliance rate of 55 percent. This year officials said that it's up to 95 percent.

Giving alcohol to minors is a fourth degree felony, punishable by up to 18 months in jail and/or a $500 fine.

MADD honored its own and celebrated life saving work. MADD’s National President’s Awards were presented to 18 individuals
and local organizations from throughout the country for their outstanding commitment to MADD by supporting our mission to stop
drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking.
Hector Martinez Jr, a MADD New Mexico Youth Program Specialist was among the recipients, and was presented the
Micky Sadoff Underage Drinking Prevention Award.
Hector made tremendous gains in forging strong relationships with local and state law enforcement agencies in order to combat underage

of Hector Martinez for his outstanding work ethic and congratulate him!

MADD New Mexico's new Home.

On April 30, 2007 MADD New Mexico relocated it's office to a wonderful downtown location.  A festive grand opening
celebration was held with over 200 people in attendance and an official red ribbon cutting ceremony by
Governor Richardson's DWI Czar, Rachel O'Connor.
During the ribbon cutting ceremony, DWI Czar, Rachel O’Connor also announced that a $400,000 contract for court monitoring has
been awarded to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) New Mexico. DWI court proceedings will be monitored in six counties:
Bernalillo, Dona Ana, McKinley, Rio Arriba, San Juan and Santa Fe Counties.
The project is a part of the State’s Impaired Driving Demonstration Project aimed at decreasing drunk driving. The court monitoring
project will provide feedback to the state on the status and effectiveness of current laws and court processes. The program will
increase dialogue between the criminal justice system and the state, in an effort to reduce alcohol-related crashes.

We are very fortunate to have individuals and companies who donated items such as carpet, paint, sheet rock, blinds,
furniture, etc. to make our new home a very happy one.
