Walk Like MADD

March 27th , 2010 - Centennial Campus-Raleigh, NC

June 26th,  2010 - Charlotte, NC

MADD's Signature 5K walk is a great way to involve your associates in a fun and important event in our area.   Our walk raised awareness for the concern of underage drinking, drunk driving and honor the victims.

Our next event,  June 26th in Charlotte...both in 2010 promises to be very successful.   The involvement of local business and corporate partners in forming teams to participate in the walk builds excitement and a sense of pride for all associates.

Being a part of the important work MADD does in North Carolina  to help save lives is a great morale booster for all those participating.

Form a team and show your company support for the important work MADD does in our state!

Shifting Gears Road Rally

FALL 2010

Beginning at the NC State Fairgrounds

The Road Rally is a novelty rally designed for auto enthusiasts or anyone who wants to have fun! The road rally is a family friendly event with activities such as a kids zone, safety fair and auto show commencing at the completion of the road rally.  The concept of this event is similar to the popular TV show The Amazing, with a few extras added in.

Unlike the serious professional road rallies that take place involving time and intense precision in every aspect, MADD's Shifting Gears road rally is a fun, innovative and novelty rally. It involves clues and puzzle solving as a way to identify landmarks to aid in navigating the course route.

How a Road Rally Works

Two or more people, in ordinary cars, on regular roads, within the legal speed limit, make up a Road Rally crew. MADD will host a "game rally" event. The challenge is to drive on time and answer trivia-type questions or puzzles and participate in game-like activities. The rally is about 40 miles long and will take 2-4 hours to complete. This event is a statewide event for MADD-NC with teams and supporters from all over the State participating.

All of the events are essentially non-timed location hunts where participants use puzzles to unveil the location of secret checkpoint locations.  It is the way in which the game is organized and the theme used that makes it enjoyable for you.  All clues used during the game are unique and fun.

Unlike the serious professional road rallies that take place involving time and intense precision in every aspect, MADD's Shifting Gears road rally is a fun innovative and novelty rally involving clues, puzzle solving as a way to identify landmarks and thus navigate the course route.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers and other fun prizes will be given out to those that get "lost" along the way! Approximately 100+ vehicles (crews) will be participating.

A crew is comprised of a driver and a navigator who are encouraged to raise $500 in pledges to support MADD. Crews will drive the route, participate in checkpoint activities and finish the road rally at a community event celebration and car show.

What is Tie One On For Safety (TOOFS)?

  • Started in 1986, MADD premier public awareness project, Tie One On For Safety, celebrates its 20th Anniversary this year. The red ribbon is a symbol of the driver's pledge to drive safe, sober and buckled up.  Additionally, MADD asks the public to Tie One On For Safety   in support of MADD Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving.
  • MADD, through the Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving, calls for intensive, high-visibility law enforcement     efforts that included sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols; advocates that all convicted drunk drivers have an alcohol ignition interlock installed on their vehicles; supports the research of transparent, vehicle-based technologies that will prevent a drunk driver from driving drunk; and mobilizes grassroots support of all of these efforts, led by MADD.
  • Holiday  drivers display a MADD red ribbon or red ribbon decal in a visible location on their vehicles to show family, friends and loved ones they support safer roads free from drunk driving. It also reminds other drivers and passengers to do the same.
  • Activities to support TOOFS are organized by a majority of the 400 MADD affiliates across the country. More than 6 million ribbons and ribbon symbols are distributed annually.
  • Our message includes seat belts because it is the best defense in a crash caused by a drunk driver.
  • Tie One On For Safety runs Thanksgiving through New Years Day when road travel is the heaviest of the year and typically drunk driving increases.

Why is Tie One On For Safety important?

  • Each year nationally, more than 1,000 people typically die during Thanksgiving to New Years in drunk driving crashes and more than 2,000 are killed in drunk driving crashes and/or crashes where safety belts were not used.
  • Nationally, fatalities involving a driver at or above at .08 were down 1.2 percent from 13,099 in 2004 to 12,945 in 2005.  Additionally, an estimated 500,000 people are injured in alcohol-related crashes each year. (NHTSA, 2006; Miller, 2000)
  • Alcohol-related crashes cost the American public an estimated $114.3 billion and people other than the drunk driver paid $71.6 billion of that amount. (Taylor, Miller and Cox 2002)

How Can You Support?

  • in a visible location on your vehicle. Red ribbons and red ribbon window decals are available through local MADD at www.madd.org/nc
  • Host parties responsibly by offering mocktails and other non-alcoholic beverages, and by providing alternate transportation or accommodations for guests who have been drinking. For safe party tips visit www.madd.org/safeparty.
  • Designate a non-drinking driver before drinking begins.
  • Log onto www.madd.org and learn more about the Campaign and how you can help support intensive enforcement, current alcohol ignition interlock technology and learn more about advanced vehicle-based anti-drunk driving technologies.

MADD will be hosting two press conferences to kick off our campaign.  One will b e in Raleigh and the other in Charlotte.

MADD other opportunities...

Alltel Concerts - Basically, we ask volunteers to help out at the designated driver booth (inside the main entrance gate), placing our MADD sign out front at the table, distributing brochures etc., recruiting people to signup as a designated driver to receive free soda's and if they are willing to run demonstrations of the fatal vision (drunk) goggles.

Help with community booth - We have a host of community events where MADD need representation.  This would include churches, military bases, corporations, foundations, and other special events.

Help with checkpoints - On many occasions, MADD is invited to attend DWI checkpoints/"Click It or Ticket"/"Booze It and Lose It", for law enforcement.  Your participation is greatly needed, in these promotional safe driving campaigns thoughout the year, to help keep drunk drivers off our roadways.
