WHAT'S NEW!

hello all,

I just wanted to drop you a line and let you know about an incident that occured here in polk county march 3. Deputies attempted to stop a suspected drunk driver, the driver led them on a chase through the county. one deputy RG Butler, deployed stop sticks and was off the highway when he was hit by the suspect vehicle. he received head injuries and is in spartanburg regional hospital at this time. the driver of the vehicle was a 16-year-old hispanic male from south carolina with no drivers license. I also wanted to tell you that Natasha Holt and I, as well as several other family members and friends, attended court in spartanburg county on this past Friday for the arraignment and bond hearing for Ricky Parris. He is the man who hit and killed Natasha's
husband Michael back in August.  Ricky Parris pled not guilty to the charges of felony dui causing death and vehicular manslaughter. Tasha, my mother and I spoke at the bond hearing and I am pleased to tell you that his bond was denied and he will be spending his days in jail until the hearing which could be as far away as 18 months.

I JUST WANTED TO DROP YOU A NOTE TO LET YOU KNOW WHAT
HAS BEEN HAPPENING WITH THE MADD FOOTHILLS CAS SINCE
WE OFFICIALLY GOT CRANKED UP THE FIRST OF JULY.
 ** PRIOR TO OUR OFFICIAL STARTUP -  I SPENT THE MONTH
OF JUNE GOING AROUND TO LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICES
TO LET THEM KNOW THAT MADD WOULD HAVE AN OFFICIAL
VOICE IN POLK AND RUTHERFORD COUNTIES.  I SPOKE WITH
THE TRYON POLICE DEPT., COLUMBUS POLICE DEPT., POLK
COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE, RUTHERFORD COUNTY SHERIFF'S
OFFICE, FOREST CITY POLICE DEPT. AND LEFT INFORMATION
WITH THE SALUDA POLICE DEPT.  ALL WERE GLAD WE WERE
GOING TO BE AROUND.
 ** JULY 1,2006  - WE MADE SURE THAT ALL LAW
ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS THAT WANTED ONE HAD A RED RIBBON
ON THEIR PATROL CARS IN POLK COUNTY.
 ** JULY 4,2006 - WE HAD A BOOTH AT THE FOURTH OF JULY
CELEBRATION IN COLUMBUS, NC.  WE HANDED OUT RED
RIBBONS AND OFFERED INFORMATION ABOUT MADD AND WHAT WE
DO.
 ** JULY 31, 2006 - TASHA (MY ASSISTANT AND RIGHT HAND
WOMAN) AND I GAVE A PRESENTATION TO THE DEMOCRATIC
WOMEN OF POLK COUNTY AT THEIR MONTHLY MEETING.  WE
ANSWERED QUESTIONS AND HAD PHOTOS AND INFORMATION
AVAILABLE.
 ** AUGUST 11, 2006 - I, MY MOTHER JOYCE AND A GOOD
FRIEND SUSAN ASH BLANTON, PROVIDED REFRESHMENTS FOR A
DUI CHECKPOINT HELD ON HIGHWAY 9 AT THE POLK AND
RUTHERFORD COUNTY LINE.  THE HIGHWAY PATROL ARRESTED
ONE (1) PERSON FOR DUI THAT NIGHT AND GAVE CITATIONS
FOR SEVERAL OTHER INFRACTIONS. OFFICERS FROM THE
HIGHWAY PATROL, THE POLK COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE AND
THE LAKE LURE POLICE DEPARTMENT WORKED THAT NIGHT AND
LIGHTING FOR THE CHECKPOINT WAS PROVIDED  BY THE
SUNNYVIEW FIRE DEPT. THE TRYON FIRE DEPT WAS
REPRESENTED AS WELL BY OUR AFORE MENTIONED FRIEND
SUSAN ASH BLANTON.  THE "BATMOBILE" (BLOOD ALCOHOL
TESTING MOBILE UNIT) WAS THERE ALSO WITH A MAGISTRATE
ON BOARD.
 ** AUGUST 19, 2006 - TASHA LOST HER HUSBAND IN A
VEHICLE TO PEDESTRIAN COLLISION IN SPARTANBURG COUNTY
SC.  THE MAN HAD A REVOKED LICENSE, NO INSURANCE, AND
AN INVALID TAG AMONG OTHER THINGS.  WE MADE SURE AS
MADD MEMBERS THAT BLOOD TOXICOLOGY WAS DONE ON THE MAN
WHO KILLED HER HUSBAND MICHAEL AND ARE CURRENTLY
AWAITING RESULTS FROM THE SLED LAB IN COLUMBIA SC.
 ** SEPTEMBER 19, 2006 - TASHA MET WITH JANET VALCORE
OF SHELBY WHOSE SON GARY VALCORE WAS KILLED BY AN
82-YEAR-OLD MAN WHOSE BAC WAS OVER TWICE THE LEGAL
LIMIT. TASHA WENT TO RUTHERFORD  COUNTY TO ATTEND
COURT WITH MRS. VALCORE AS SUPPORT AND TO ANSWER ANY
QUESTIONS MRS. VALCORE HAD.

PLEASE FEEL FREE TO E-MAIL ME WITH ANY SUGGESTIONS OR
QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE. AS WE ARE A NEW COMMUNITY
ACTION SITE, YOUR INPUT WILL BE HELPFUL AND
APPRECIATED.
A REGULAR MEETING MAY BE DIFFICULT TO ARRANGE, BUT I
WILL TRY TO KEEP EVERYONE UP TO DATE WITH E-MAILS AS
OFTEN AS POSSIBLE.
I WILL ALSO TRY TO GET VICTIM IMPACT STATEMENT
GUIDELINES OUT TO ALL OF YOU. PLEASE MAKE COPIES OF
THIS AND USE THEM, IF WE GET ENOUGH GOOD IMPACT
STATEMENTS WE CAN TRY TO GET A VICTIM IMPACT PANEL SET
UP IN OUR PART OF THE STATE.
