SADNESS AND JOY AT 2008 MADD SC DUI ENFORCEMENT CEREMONY
Close to three-hundred law enforcement officers, public safety officials and MADD volunteers attended the 2008 MADD SC DUI Enforcement Recognition Awards Ceremony, July 23rd at Seawell's in Columbia.
The crowd heard from South Carolina DPS/OHS Director Phil Riley. William Bilton, Executive Director of the SC Commission on Prosecution Coordination outline the new DUI Reform law. The Master of Ceremonies was South Carolina Law Enforcement Liaison Dennis Ray.
The highlight of the ceremony came with the Keynote Speaker, MADD National Law Enforcement Initiative Coordinator, Carl McDonald, spoke about efforts to increase Ignition Interlock use in cars of DUI offenders. McDonald, a former State Trooper, told the story of how he lost his five-year old daughter to a drunk driver, and the traumatic emotional effects the DUI crash had on his life. He stated at that time, he was skeptical about MADD's first mission of stopping drunk driving. But, after the introduction of advanced technology such as Ignition Interlocks, he believes stopping drunk driving is an attainable goal.
