Designated Drivers

One of the very first effects of alcohol on the body is loss of judgment . So someone who would never consider taking the risk to drink and drive while sober, may think differently after drinking.  They may not realize their level of impairment or find other justifications to drive themselves home like “it’s not very far” or “I don’t want to leave my car here.”

That’s why it is so important not to wait until you are out and about to decide how to get home.  Plan ahead for how you will get home before the drinking begins, either with someone who will not be drinking at all and will make sure everyone gets home safely, public transportation, a taxi or a ride-share service.

Every single drunk driving death and injury is entirely preventable – all it requires is a little bit of planning!

Designated Driver Programs

To help you get home safe, MADD has created several designated driver programs to encourage individuals make a plan before they leave home:

Since 2009, MADD and the National Football League has worked together to ask football fans to play the most important position – the designated driver.  This includes game day activation with 12 teams and PSAs.

Ride-share partners

To give people more options when it comes to choosing a safe ride home, MADD has partnered with ride-share services Uber and Lyft.

Give the Gift of a Designated Driver

You can step up to the plate and volunteer to be a designated driver for your friends or loved ones.  Just download one of our themed coupons and give it to someone who you want to give the gift of a safe ride home.
