Community Outreach

On May 3rd, 2013 MADD, represented by Victim Service Specialist Rosa Villanueva and Victim/Survivor Lourdes Salgado, along with Univision's Grace Olivares at the public affairs tv show “Nuestra Vida” (“Our Life”) talking about “Responsible Driving” and safety tips addressed to parents especially with Prom and Graduation season coming closer. Victim/Survivor Lourdes Salgado briefly shared her story on how last year her father was killed by a drunk driver.

   

Great Day Houston - April 24, 2013

On Wednesday, April 24, as audience members for the Great Day Houston morning show (Channel 11, KHOU) with Deborah Duncan! Deborah is a strong supporter of MADD because her brother was killed in a drunk driving crash. Our presence at the Great Day Houston morning show was a fantastic publicity for Walk Like MADD and gave us the chance to further promote the mission and service MADD provides to SE Texas!

 

 

                                     Crime Victims' Week Panel at UHD

Panelists at the Crime Victims' Week Event at the University of Houston Downtown School of Criminal Justice. Special Thanks to Barbara Belbot, J.D., Ph. D., Department Chair and Glenda Watson, Intern.

Students and many others participated in an event to inform the public about victim's rights from the moment the crash happens until it is adjudicated. In addition, we had the story of Lourdes Salgado a victim/survivor who talked about the consequences of drinking and driving and the services we provide, and Stephanie Becker, from the Greater Houston Transportation Company, provided information on alternative transportation.

   

PowerTalk 21 Press Conference Arpil 17, 2013 

MADD established April 21st as PowerTalk 21 – the national day for parents to talk with their children about alcohol. This national day was launched in 2011 to get the conversation started between parents and teens, using the Power of Parents™ handbook as their guide.

  Annual Celebration of Life Moving Success

          MADD’s Southeast Texas’ annual Celebration of Life gathering was held on Sunday, January 6, 2013, again at St. Thomas University Jones Hall with several victim families, and MADD staff, and MADD interns and volunteers in attendance. This year’s theme was “Every life leaves something beautiful behind”. Each person there received a special gift of a seashell, with a pearl attached to the shell, and the theme statement tied to a gold ribbon.

 

 

MADD-City of Houston 6th. Annual Candlelight Vigil

Victims/survivors joined us as at the steps of City Hall as we recognized those citizens who have lost their lives due to an alcohol or other drug related incidents on October 29, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.

 

 

 White Cross Memorial Marker

 Family and friends of Jasmine Araceli Jade Smith, killed by a drunk diver in April 29th 2011, finally reached their goal of setting up a white cross memorial marker at the place where their beloved one was taken away from them. This was possible thanks to the Harris County Precinct 2 and MADD Southeast team work.

Today we had the opportunity to see the results of our hard work and efforts by sharing such a special occasion with the Smith family and friends, being this the first white cross set up since we established the new process.

 

 

 

The Walk Like MADD Fall 2012 on October 6th 2012 

Once again we were able to get together with victims/survivors to honor their loved ones, remember their lives and send a strong message that we do not want this to happen anymore.  Many teams, sposors and concerned citizens helped this walk be a total success.  Thanks to all that contributed and attended the WLM event.

 

 


 

 

 

On September 25, 2011 Victims spoke about the consequences of drinking and driving to Univision.  The message to the Hispanic community is part of the efforts to inform the public.

4th. of July Parade @ Oakridge North. 

 

Jeanette and Mike Einkauf, along with their daughter and grandson, participated in the Oak Ridge North 4th of July parade this year.  They represented MADD in the parade and also manned a booth after the parade to pass out information on MADD before the city’s firework show.

  

 

Designated Driver Booth at their Brewfest 2012 held Saturday, June 23, 2012
Pictured are (R) Rotarian Carol Levin, MADD Volunteer and Advisory Board Member with (L) Rotarian Alison Wilkins at the Rotary of Katy’s Designated Driver Booth at their Brewfest 2012 held Saturday, June 23, in the Villagio Town Center in Katy. This was a joint effort between Katy Rotary and MADD amongst the beer tasting festival welcoming hundreds of people. People were asked if they were the designated driver upon registration and if so they were given a green wrist band that gave them entry to the non-alcoholic beverages and treats that the Designated Driver Booth offered. Green banded people were also eligible for numerous drawings including an Apple iPad. Toward the end of the afternoon all water, root beer, and teas were handed out freely to anyone attending the event.  Over 500 pieces of MADD literature was given out as well as many many people dropped by the booth to learn more about MADD and safer driving practices.

 

  

 

The Walk Like MADD Spring 2012 on May 19th. 2012 program was a total success!

Thank you to each and every one of you who participated in Walk Like MADD 2012! We are making a difference with every dollar raised and every step taken for this worthy cause, while supporting MADD Southeast Texas efforts!   Please continue helping reach our goals so we can Eliminate Drunk Driving.  More than 500 people atended and were able to walk in memory of their loved ones.


 

 

 

 

Carol Levin, representing her work and volunteerism with MADD, attended the reception hosted by the Mayor of Houston’s office, on April 23rd, at the historic Clayton Library in downtown Houston. The reception was to honor specific nominated volunteers to the yearly Mayor’s Awards for Volunteers in Houston. When the line was extensively long to have a picture made with the Mayor live, Carol, and staffer Dave Anderson, opted for this pose instead. Thank you Carol for all you do for MADD.

 

  

DD Southeast Texas held its annual Take the Wheel Law Enforcement Recognition Event on Friday, April 20th at the Downtown Aquarium in Houston.  The ballroom was packed with over 250 people in attendance.  In addition to the more than 100 law enforcement officers honored, prosecutors, judges and other community partners were recognized at the event.  Attendees came from across Harris and Montgomery Counties, with VIP attendees including Houston Police Department Chief Charles McClelland, Montgomery County Sheriff Tommy Gage and Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon.  In addition to the awards, a MADD volunteer provided a musical tribute to honor two injured and one fallen officer from 2011.  The event was a huge success!

 

 

 

  

 

 

 

MADD CELEBRATES CRIME VICTIMS' RIGHTS WEEK 

 

MADD Celebrates Crime Victims' Rights Week by reaching out to the community. Students at Victory Preparatory Accademy participated in an outreach effort to inform them of their rights as victims/survivors, of the effect of underage drinking and drinking and driving.

Salute to Law Enforcement - Wollowbrook Mall

On May 7, 2011, MADD participated in the 11th annual Salute to Law Enforcement at Willowbrook Mall.  Approximately 20 agencies with over 200 officers were represented at the event.  MADD had two staff and five volunteers work the event.  Volunteer Andrea Schmauss was able to get gift certificates from Academy, Fuddruckers and Bed Bath and Beyond which were raffled off for law enforcement that signed up at the event.  Additionally, MADD gave out some challenge coins to officers that were selected in the raffle.  This was a great networking opportunity for MADD in the law enforcement community.

Houston Young Lawyers Association Liberty Bell Award recognizes one outstanding non-lawyer in Texas who has made the most selfless contribution to his or her community to strengthen the effectiveness of the American system of justice by instilling better understanding and appreciation of the law.

 

 

 

  

2011 Law Enforcement Awards and Recognition Event  4/8/2011 

On April 8, the Southeast Texas Affiliate held its 2011 Law Enforcement Awards and Recognition Event at the Downtown Aquarium to recognize the achievements of local law enforcement for the 2010 calendar year. Twenty law enforcement agencies, with about 100 officers, were in attendance. All together, more than 200 people attended the event, including local district attorneys, judges and local agencies working with MADD. Warren Diepraam, Assistant District Attorney for Montgomery County, emceed the event.

 

Sixteen awards were given out and each officer with 25 or more DWI arrests in 2010 received a challenge coin in recognition of their work.

2011 Law and Order Golf Tournament 2/28/2011

 On February 28, 2011  Mothers Against Drunk Driving – Southeast Texas Affiliate hosted its LAW  & ORDER Golf Tournament at Willow Fork Country Club in Katy.  This exciting tournament supports MADD and its mission to stop drunk driving, support victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking.  And it was a SUCCESS!  The funds raised through the LAW & ORDER Golf Tournament will go towards our victim services, youth programs and community education programs offered in our region to help keep our roadways safe and support the victims of this senseless crime.

Launch of Take The Wheel Campaign 12/21/2010

 A program launch press conference was held on December 21, 2010 at Discovery Green Park in downtown Houston.  MADD President, Laura Dean-Mooney emceed the event.  Additional speakers included representatives from the Houston Police Department, Harris County Sheriff, Harris County District Attorney's office, Montgomery County Sheriff, Montgomery County District Attorney's office and a victim.  Approximately 16 law enforcement officers attended the event with around 10 different law enforcement agencies represented including: Houston Police Department, Harris County Sheriff, Montgomery County Sheriff, University of Houston Police and La Porte Police.  Several volunteers showed up to assist with the installation of the 188 rosemary Christmas trees which had many dedicated to victims of drunk driving crashes.  The event was covered by several media outlets.
