Power of Parents: Being All-Star Parents for Your MVP’s

Spring is in the air and sports in full swing.  Whether your child plays sports or not, we know that every parent wants their kid to hit one out of the park when it comes to making good choices.  That’s why for April is Alcohol Awareness Month, MADD is providing parents with the resources they need to make a game plan when it comes to talking about alcohol with their kids. PowerTalk 21® day – the national day for parents to have conversations with teens about alcohol – is April 21st.

Talking with teens about alcohol will increase the chances of them choosing not to drink and brings you closer together. Research shows that parents are the number one influence on children’s decisions about alcohol.  So believe it or not, YOU are the biggest influence on your kids, not their friends.

New Video Series

MADD’s Power of Parents program includes five topical guides to help you talk to your children about alcohol. New in 2018, these topical guides are now a video series! This powerful series led by Robert Turrisi, Ph.D., will give insight into your child’s possible circumstances and offer you valuable advice on starting the important conversation with your children about alcohol.

Segments include the following insightful topics:

  • Your Teen’s World
    • Gaining independence in middle school and high school and how teens think
  • Parenting Styles
    • What style of parenting do you use and can you make a difference?
  • Talking About Alcohol
    • Learn how to start the conversation and how to get your child to talk about alcohol
  • Making Good Choices
    • Peer pressure, social circles, and good choices
  • Discussion Checklist
    • Interactive fact check and dialogue examples

Please use these and all of the resources available to you to help your teens understand the risks of underage drinking.
