Parnall – Crime Victims’ Rights Week: April 18-24

The rights of victims are key in ensuring the proper respect and recognition is given to those who have been at the receiving end of crime. Victims must not be forgotten in the judicial system and in our society.

This week, we support victims of crimes and encourage our community to do the same during National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. This week marks the 40th anniversary of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week and is commemorated April 18 – 24, 2021.

What is National Crime Victims’ Rights Week?

National Crime Victims’ Rights Week is a time to remember crime victims and survivors, acknowledge the achievement of victim services, and honor those who have committed to serving victims of crime.

The Office for Victims of Crime leads communities every April to observe National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. This year’s theme is Support Victims. Build Trust. Engage Communities. It emphasizes the importance of leveraging community support to help crime victims.

The Resource Guide provides a number of outreach tools and sample materials to help with the awareness campaign and integrating the theme into your own message to the community. It includes sample materials for traditional media outlets and social media, artwork, and a history of the crime victims’ rights movement.

Ways to Get Involved

You can help raise awareness about victims’ rights and services, highlight special programs, and honor victims through various initiatives throughout the week. Some ways to get involved include:

  • Reviewing the history of notable court decisions, groundbreaking studies, the advent of victims’ rights organizations, and the passage of significant federal and state legislation
  • Including artwork that commemorates the week on your business and personal social media pages, including awareness posters, theme posters, web art, and theme art
  • Showing videos as an introduction to your crime victims’ awareness efforts, for use at a candlelight vigil, and to embed them into your own website
  • Viewing the National Crime Victims’ Service Awards Ceremony on April 23 from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. eastern time
  • Hosting special events that honor crime victims
  • Forming new partnerships and multi-disciplinary teams to help crime victims in your community
  • Posting notable quotes about crime victims
